Background of the Study
Waste management has become an increasingly critical issue in urban and rural areas across Nigeria, as rapid population growth and urbanization put pressure on waste disposal systems. In many communities, women’s groups have taken an active role in promoting environmental sustainability through waste management initiatives. In Zuru LGA, Kebbi State, women’s groups have been instrumental in promoting waste collection, recycling, and awareness-raising activities. These groups play a pivotal role in creating local solutions to waste management challenges, leveraging their networks to ensure that waste is properly disposed of and recycled. This study will explore the role of women’s groups in waste management in Zuru LGA, assessing their contributions, challenges, and effectiveness in improving environmental sanitation (Ali & Haruna, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the active involvement of women’s groups in waste management, several challenges still hinder their effectiveness in addressing waste management issues in Zuru LGA. These include inadequate resources, insufficient government support, and low levels of community awareness about the importance of waste segregation and recycling. This study aims to investigate the role of women’s groups in waste management, assess their impact, and recommend strategies to enhance their contributions to sustainable waste management in Zuru LGA.

• What role do women’s groups play in waste management in Zuru LGA?
• What challenges do women’s groups face in waste management activities in the region?
• How can the contributions of women’s groups to waste management in Zuru LGA be enhanced?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
• H1: Women’s groups in Zuru LGA significantly contribute to improved waste management practices.
• H2: Insufficient resources and lack of government support hinder the effectiveness of women’s groups in waste management.
• H3: Strengthening the capacity of women’s groups will lead to more sustainable waste management practices in Zuru LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the role of women’s groups in waste management, emphasizing their contribution to improving environmental sanitation in Zuru LGA. The findings will help inform local government policies and initiatives aimed at supporting women’s involvement in waste management. By highlighting the challenges faced by women’s groups, the study will also contribute to the development of strategies to enhance their capacity and impact in the region (Ali & Haruna, 2024).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on women’s groups involved in waste management activities in Zuru LGA, Kebbi State. Limitations may include challenges in accessing comprehensive data on waste management practices and the potential reluctance of some groups to share information due to concerns over privacy or political interests.
